Graduate Studies in Chemistry and Chemical Physics at Nevada
The Department of Chemistry at Nevada offers graduate degrees in Chemistry (MS and PhD) and Chemical Physics (PhD). The department hosts 50-60 graduate students that work towards their degree completion under the supervision of research-active faculty in their area of study.
In their pursuit of a graduate degree, our students typically choose a research group by the end of their first semester and spend subsequently most of their time involved in cutting-edge research.
The research programs in the department enjoy an excellent national and international reputation, reflecting our commitment to quality and our success in competing for research funding. Our research-active faculty receive funding from national and international agencies that fund research for graduate students.
The research effort is supported by state-of-the-art facilities that incorporate advanced computational clusters and chemical instrumentation, which are maintained by experienced professionals. Graduate students gain, during their research, extensive hands-on experience in the department instrumentation. Our research facilities encompass Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometers, both solution and solid-state, single crystal X-ray diffractometer, mass spectrometer, and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectrometer, among others.
The department maintains an outstanding seminar program with invited speakers of international stature, which enables our students to interact with the outside speakers. Among the highlights of this program are the annual R.C. Fuson Lectureship, the biennial Sierra Nevada ACS Distinguished Chemist Lectureship, the biennial Distinguished Physical Chemist Lectureship, and the annual Chemistry Graduate Student Association Lectureship, all of which have featured Nobel Laureates.
Finally, our students are provided the opportunity to travel regularly to national and international meetings to present their research findings.
