Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research is an excellent way to gain additional experience for whatever future endeavors. Although there is thesis, many undergrads start before their senior year. Depending on the professor, the minimum requirements to start research is general chemistry and organic chemistry labs. Research could be theoretically started whenever these general requirements are met. The best way to know is to contact the professor your interested in doing research for. Additional information can be found in the "Chemistry Major's Handbook" found here. One thing to be noted, majoring in chemistry is not always the requirement, depending on the professor, often undergrads majoring other than chemistry can do research in the chemistry department (such as Biochemistry). Professors here at UNR are very open to ug research for high potential chemists. Viewing the professor’s web pages on what research they specialize in is a great place to start. Contacting them through email, with your credentials (grades in chemistry, physics, and math courses from UNR is highly encouraged–the latter two are important for physical chemistry laboratories) and personally introducing yourself is an excellent way to get involved (if you don’t know the professor already). Other times laboratories are full already and some cannot handle additional students. Speaking with the professor on a future date to start could be a possibility. Benefits of ug research:
Additional opportunities for ug research is also available at UNR's department of ug research. |
